The idea
Recognizing a chord symbol is only the beginning of accompanying. A pianist also chooses where to place the chord, which notes to include, when to play and when to wait. This proposal connects harmonic knowledge to decisions that can be heard and discussed at the piano.
Over the first four bars of "Autumn Leaves", Cm7 | F7 | B♭maj7 | E♭maj7, demonstrations begin with thirds and sevenths before adding fuller voicings. Participants compare voice leading, register and density while keeping the progression constant. A short motif using F, G and B-flat gives the accompanist something specific to support.
The workshop then turns from building chords to responding to a phrase. Sustained harmony, a rhythmic answer and a well-placed rest can each suggest a different musical relationship. Rather than treating a voicing as a fixed answer, participants explain what their choice contributes to the sound. The level can be adjusted for a teacher entering jazz or a pianist refining ensemble work.
What we would explore
- Hear two accompaniments before naming the difference between them.
- Build a voicing in layers and follow the movement of its inner parts.
- Keep the harmony while changing one feature of the accompaniment to support a partner.
A question to tryWhich note or rhythmic choice makes this accompaniment help the phrase?
A practical takeaway
A listening and comparison process for practicing comping, plus chord examples and questions that transfer to ensemble rehearsal.
Try it with a rhythm section
A blues gives a small group a familiar place to compare accompaniment choices. Keep the harmony manageable and listen to what happens when the pianist plays fewer chords, changes the note length or leaves a phrase unanswered. With bass and drums, students can hear how the keyboard part contributes to the shared feel.
A visiting session can combine piano demonstrations, short student performances and another take after one agreed change. The host and I would choose the repertoire, level and available instruments. Teaching fees, travel and accommodation for an in-person visit are discussed before any engagement is confirmed.
